WBF at the AIGA See Change Conference

May 13, 2011

I’m one of ten speakers that has been chosen to present at the See Change Conference which is being held on May 19th and 20th at the University of Minnesota’s Twince Cities Campus.  I’ll be talking about my Wild Birds Flying project,  an audio-visual presentation titled:   “Tiny Aviators” – Inspiration and Evolution of  a bird brained idea.   I hope to see you there.

This conference is intended for curious creatives to refresh their talents with innovative ideas and imagery. This exchange is important as visualists struggle to reinvent themselves in today’s changing times. The See Change Conference is one way to bring visual people together.http://www.seechangeconference.org/

Wild Birds on MN Public Television show MN Original

January 4, 2011

A story on my wild birds project will be broadcast on Twin Cities Public Television’s new weekly arts series, MN Original!

The crew from MN Original joined us at Carpenter Nature Center (carpenternaturecenter.org) for a bird banding event on a extremely windy day this past fall.  Not a great day for netting birds (as they could more easily see the mist nets blowing in the wind.)  But we did get one bird which quickly outsmarted our camera/lighting set up after being banded.  Ah…. well  at least the process was documented,  and  it was fun to have MN Original on the shoot with us.  I’m sure we’ll have better luck this Spring.

The show airs first this Thursday the 6th of Jan at 7:30PM.

The full episode will also be posted on the first broadcast date:

Wild Birds Flying

May 18, 2010

WildBirdsFlying.com is coming!  If you’ve seen an earlier post you may have seen a rough test of my rig.  It’s getting more proficient and this is the year for production.  I’ll be taking my studio light on the trail to capture some wild birds, out in the wild!  Well,  it’s not that wild,  it’s usually near a building with a bathroom.  But it is outside and if you know me that’s a big step.  It’ll probably get wilder too!  So here’s the process, give it a watch and let me know what you think.  I’ll be launching a site this Summer and adding content as I photograph more birds getting back into the wild.

It’s a bird….

July 6, 2009

An early test of my hands-free bird photographing thing-a-ma-jig.

I have a great love for birds.  I’m not  fanatical in the sense that I know all types and species but I’m intrigued by their grace and beauty.  They are everywhere but still very mysterious;  You don’t often have the opportunity to see them in great detail. They’re always moving,   jittery when not in flight.  The Pederson’s field guide was the primary inspiration for this project,  the illustrations are very detailed and pretty.  It got me thinking about  capturing  birds in flight against uncluttered backgrounds.  It got me to engineer and  build this thing….so the birds and I can be closer.
